Interesting article. I agree on the assessment that the raw interfaces tend to be very much the same. And unless you're running really old hardware, the difference in resource usage between desktops like Xfce, KDE, Gnome and Cinnamon, is really not great enough to warrant the difference in functionality.
Should project coders be considering pooling their expertise into fewer desktops? Maybe so.
The author seems to want to go back to basics and revisit desktops of yesteryear. Some of the true lightweight modern desktops, like Fluxbox, already seem to be doing that.
