The search for the next-generation video codec for the open web has reached an impasse. Few of the options are truly open or free, and those that are free are not being pushed by the major forces.
The article mentions Google and the VP8 codec which it would release under an unencumbered royalty free licence.
This does not mean open source. It just means "free as in beer".
We need submarine patents to be banned and force anybody with an interest in Theora to speak up now or lose the right to place any claims in the future.
