LXer: Should Debian be forked because of systemd?

Published at LXer:

In today's open source roundup: Veteran Unix admins threaten Debian fork if systemd replaces sysvinit. Plus: Ubuntu turns ten years old today, and Ubuntu 15.04 to have codename Vivid Vervet. Systemd has set the Linux world on fire, and that inferno continues to rage out of control. It has spawned endless discussion threads and many angry blog posts. This time around a collection of veteran Unix administrators is threatening to fork Debian if systemd replaces sysvinit.

Systemd has replaced sysvinit so threatening to fork Debian if it happens makes no sense. Debian 8 (Jessie) will be released with systemd as its default the replacement has happened already in Jessie as Debian Testing which goes into freeze in about 3 weeks. So if the threat is real they should be working on the fork now. If they aren't then it is just a hollow bluff.

Guaranteed it's a hollow bluff. That said, it would be good.

I'd say "usurped" is a better term, or "overthrown". Yes, it would be good to have a fork, it may encourage other distros to resist and maybe overthrow the usurpers.

Again? How many times has Debian already been forked? More than a dozen, starting with Ubuntu? Seems like a total waste of time to me. If you don't like Debian, there are lots of alternatives already available.

How is usurped or overthrown a better term? The vote was, whether you like it or not, done within the rules of the Debian project. If overthrown or usurped is a better term the vote would not have been legal.
