Well, it's been nearly three decades, but maybe Open Source is finally ready to lean a little bit farther towards the whole freedom/ethics thing.
If so, that would certainly be progress for Open Source.

Certainly the future of privacy. Today, people are (presently) tracked everywhere they go like cattle with tags on their ears. From the founding of the FSF in 1984, this is a dystopic reality. It's not really hyperbole to say that modern technology does affect the fate of the world-- and the GSM stack isn't the least bit "open" or "free." It's a completely proprietary system that things like iOS and Android run on top of, or even next to.
Facebook is a similar problem for the world, even new-improved Torvalds says it's "a disease." (He also said hating Microsoft is one, but I guess hating Facebook, Nvidia and Twitter is alright. I certainly think it is.)
