LXer: Nautilus Will No Longer Launch Binaries Or Desktop Files

Published at LXer:

Nautilus (or Files), the Gnome file manager, received a Git update which removes its ability to launch binaries or programs in general. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm dreaming or not.

This seems like a very proscriptive change meant to suit only GNOME/Flatpak. That's not surprising, but I sure wonder what it will amount to. I thought the way to win was "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish", not goofy minimalism.

Normally, I try to remain a bit more charitable, but I'm having a bad day. I'm also a power user, who wants all of their software to be as flexible and powerful as possible, so I'm definitely not the target market.

I'm open to a more positive take, if anyone's got it.

"Back then it was common for apps to be delivered in a tarball, nowadays that's out of question."

But wait, somebody just did this!
