I wonder what Linus means by that quote ? Is Linux on the way to moving to a filesystem that does not have inodes ? If true, that is disturbing to me.

No.

The LKML discussion where the so called "flaming" occurred is exclusively about a non-typical filesystem, tracefs.

If the article was written by a real journalist, they might have put in some effort to understand enough of what is being discussed to be able to communicate that to readers, but they're clearly only interested in churning out yet another contrived low quality hit piece.
