Where did this notion come from that Microsoft was ever an innovative company? As far as I've ever seen Microsoft has never been an innovator. Ever. The vast majority of the time, they are well behind the curve and just buy whatever they need to catch up. Their attempts at innovation have more often resulted in things like Bob, Vista or the ($&*@#&$()%&*@&!@ing ribbon interface than in anything actually useful.
Microsoft's approach has certainly worked well for them (maybe not so much for the rest of computing) but lets not cry over them becoming the next IBM because quite frankly, they've never been anything else.
