I am new to Suse and I got 9.2 and updated it.. (i had the CD but never really installed it). The installation went smooth and I like Suse overall..but I have a peeve about Suse not having cc or gcc? wtf..
Some programs like Caffeine are really crappy.. so I need to install my own.
yetistomps@linux:~/MPlayer-1.0pre7try2> ./configure

What tools do I need to succesfully compile programs in the future? other than gcc in Suse 9.2? I am currently downloading gcc-4.0.2.tar.bz2 but I am not sure if I need the java too or the fortran.. I am a little overwhelmed at the choices.
I've read in another post that I need binutils and make. But I can't tell if Suse has them already or not.
Any input would be enormously appreciated. Thank u.
Except in your case you will want to get the packages from the 9.2 (not 9.1) ftp directory.
In any event, if you're not happy with kaffeine, you might like to check out packman's page for xine packages / different front ends: http://packman.links2linux.org/
Thanks.. greatly appreciated. That made my life a lot easier.. just one quick question.. I have a PIII coppermine 1 ghz.. so do I get the packages from i586 or i686 in the 9.2 ftp dir?
Just a comment: YaST is a very powerful tool, especially when it comes to installation of software. Since you are using 9.2, most of the packages you are looking for (gcc and other compilers, libraries, etc.) should be available on your installation CD and can be installed with YaST -> Software -> Install and remove software. If you don't find a particular package, you can add online sources: YaST -> Software -> Change source of installation. This way is far more convenient than to download packages and install them by hand.
For mplayer, you will need a whole bunch of libraries, if you plan to compile it yourself. For a precompiled rpm package, have a look here: http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=128
The above server can be added to the installation sources as well. Have a look at the sticky thread about YaST update sources.
Thanks for the update... I really APPRECIATE it. I believe YAST would be my best bet at this point and install mplayer via rpm on Packman's site. I also want xine or an app that plays DVD's (with menus), exclusively. Sort of like PowerDVD for winxp.
Mplayer doesn't have the menu option for DVD's and xine i don't know. Any thoughts?
