VI set number question

I created a member in /home/xyz as follows called .exrc

the contents are: 'set number' (no quotes)

It is supposed to allow to default to line numbers in the vi editor when editing new and existing members.

However doesn't work. Was wondering if I'm missing something.

Any ideas would be appreicated.

Thanks

What version of vi are you using? If it's vim, it could be loading another file instead of .exrc (e.g .vimrc) or if you happen to have $VIMINIT or $EXINIT set, they would prevent the loading of the .exrc file.

Thanks for your reply.

After trying a number of things I found that I had been doing a 'SU' to get root priviledges and that's why it didn't work.

My original message about about .exrc is correct only thing and it worked for me when I wasn't logged in as a root user.

Thanks again.
