Upgrade SuSE 9.x to current

Linux mars 2.4.21-303-default #1 Tue Dec 6 12:33:58 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I know it's been a while since I've upgraded I've updated software but not the whole shabang. I have a couple Q's pardon my ignorance:

- Do I need to purchase the new SuSE from novell?
- What's all this about opensuse can I use this to upgrade with for free?
- What's the difference between opensuse and Novell SuSE?
- Will both installers upgrade my distro without reformat I would like to of course keep my files.

I'm happy with my install now just wanted to keep up to date.

Opensuse you can download and install free of charge
If you like to have SLED OR SLES you have to buy it

Yes opensuse is free but upgrading means you have to upgrade from version to version that is o lot of pain

- What's the difference between opensuse and Novell SuSE?
Novell suse the last on called in that way was suse 9.3 professional
First it comes out as opensuse and SLED and SLES is based on opensuse

No you have to download the version and upgrade .
And backup all you.re data

I'm happy with my install now just wanted to keep up to date.
My opinion for what it is worth backup all you're data .
Do a fresh install and if you have /home on a separate partition do not format /home

Thanks for the info.
All my data is on a separate mounted hard drive. Backups are always necessary that was a lame question now that I read it again'
I'm going to research a bit more as I make backups and reinstall fresh. Thanks again'

Would agree - it is too big a jump to update from your current version.

The latest version of opensuse 11.1 can be downloaded free of charge from:-

http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/iso/

You would then need to burn the iso (as an iso not as a file) to a DVD or CD

Then copy back your files
