Hi people.I'm a newbie to Linux.
I've been trying for a month to boot open Suse from 4 different disk downloaded from different locations. Each set of disk are said to be good when downloaded and burned. I have 4 different computers I play with and two I built within the last 18 months and are high speed. I use AMD processors and 2 have 1 gig mem. The disk will not boot on any of them. I have set them to boot from CD only and I get the message "no system files found insert systms disk and press any key. The computer I want to install on has no other operating system and I also get a message of no MBR. All my computers are formatted DOS 32. I have 3 other Linux programs and all 3 boot and work great. All the down loads are ISO x86 and the first and second set came from Open Suse org. I have reburned disk 1 several times. I thought I would give Suse a try before I decided on the OS I wanted to use. Am I downloading the wrong program.

Have you verified that the downloaded images contain no errors? For this, you will need to check the images with the checksum that typically accompanies an ISO image downloaded from the same directory. Also, have you attempted different mirrors in downloading the images? Perhaps there may be a problem with the download from certain sites hosting the SuSE images.

I have verified the downloads and I have reburned disk 1 3 times. Istill get the message no system disk replace disk and press enter. I have tried with windows loaded and without any operating system.
I am losing my patience and I'm ready to return to Freespire. I would have liked to try Suse first!

How are you burning it? If you are using a regular copy command or a drag&drop, it won't work. Instead, you must burn it an an "ISO image" or "image burn".

To recap, the basic safety checks are:

1. Download from a known, trusted site
2. After the download, run the MD5SUM to verify the file was not corrupted in transit
3. Burn the file as an ISO image
4. When burning, don't burn at the top speed, instead burn at a slower speed no matter what the top rated speed of your burner is. Burning at the max possible speed only increases the chances of getting a coaster. IMHO, for a DVD burn at 2X, and for a CD burn at 16X
