Triple boot?

Hi guys/Gals,

Do you know if it is possible to install Suse 9.1 on a computer that already has dueal boot ( win (*SE, RedHat 9.0 ) ?

has anyone does it ?

I just inserted the Suse DVD and tried to do through as if a new install, but it does not seem to recognize the exisintg GRUB of RedHat, and I am afraid that it will overwrite the RH grub in my fisrt dis and that I will endup with only Win98 and Suse..!

I need to have all 3 as boot options...

Any ideas ?

yes you can install it.
You must choose if you want to use RH's bootloader or SuSE's...
If SuSE writes its own grub it should take into account the RedHat installation,
if not, you can always add it later. Make sure you're not formatting RH though.

How can I find where RH has saved the bootloader/grub config?

I guess it's in /etc/grub.conf. I think the easiest way is to install the SuSE bootloader on a floppy instead of the HDD-MBR. Then you can add the SuSE entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst to RH's grub.conf.

Ah, that is an excellent idea!
That way I can boot suse when I need it, but if I boot from HDD0 then I have RH & WIn98.

I will try this......and see if I manage to get all 3 working with a HDD0 later on.
thanks,
redrobin77.

Thanks!
Certainly you could do that, but my initial idea was to have all three OS in the bootloader of RH available. The floppy is only needed to protect the RH bootloader from getting overwritten by SuSE grub and to have the settings that you can copy to the RH grub.conf. After that the floppy should not be necessary anymore. Good luck!

What happens when you install but don't have a floppy drive? Is the bootloader merely not written anywhere? ... and if this is the case, could you just edit the existing bootloader for the new OS?

It worked!

hello All,

I have successfully installed Suse on the existing RH, WIN machine.

I installed the bootloader on the floppy, then for the first time booted through the floppy.
Then mounted the RH partition and copied the Suse grub.conf section in to the Redhat bootloader grub.conf.

Then booted through HDD0 and it showed all 3 boot optioons ( Suse, RH, WIn98 ) as expected.

thanks for helps...

and yes, I don't need the floppy anymore.
