Question SUSE10.2 RAID 5 Stability

<<Warning Nubie>>

I've been trying to get a stable RAID5 configuration using SUSE. I have a four port SIL3114 PCI card with three 74G drives connected. I've been able to create a stable RAID0 volume, but can't get stability with RAID5. I've tried the following:

1: Configured RAID5 in the 3114 BIOS - SUSE does not detect the volume and shows me three disks sda - sdc

2: Configured in SUSE using reiserFS but file system stalls with journalling errors.

3: configured in SUSE using EXT3 system becomes unstable

I've rebuilt with APIC disabled - did not seem to help.

so now I'm out of ideas and my lack of knowledge stops me from digging deeper - anybody suggest anything or anywhere to read up on the subject?
