suse tweak/optimization guide?

hi,

is there an online tweak/optimization guide for suse 9.2?

im going to install it tonight on my laptop, the specs are bit low but its just so i can get to grips with linux.

setup:

celeron 600mhz
192mb pc100
9gb hdd (2x 4gb partitions, 2x swap partitions)

im going to dual boot with windows xp, each os using a 4gb partition and 256mb swap file partition.

will there be any problems?

There shouldn't be. I've installed SuSE quite a few times with a dual boot with Win XP and didn't have any problems ie... grub should detect Win XP and allow you to boot into it.

X may be a little slow due to the amount of RAM in your system though.

yea, kde can hog up resources pretty well. Not sure about SuSE, but I got around this problem by using Fluxbox. Its menu driven, without icons so it takes a bit of getting used to. Its great fun if it holds your interest. Lots of customizations available through reading the docs.

Gnome isn't much of a resource hog either and its better than KDE anyways.

i was going to try gnome as it says it uses less resources.
The ram is a little low, but its just going to be learning experience, once i get to grips with it i'll pop it on my desktop. (2.4ghz amd, 1gb ram, etc)

can you disable/choose not to install certain items in yast at the install stage?

xp runs ok, its only for surfing the net and the odd word doc.

if you are concerned about memory management for your window manager, i suggest you take a look at xfce4.2

it's THE window manager choice for people low in computer specs.

i have a fast computer but i prefer to load xfce4 instead of kde.
it starts in 2 seconds while kde starts up in about 15seconds...

I don't have the fastest computer in the world, and i don't use kde, but kde hasn't taken 15 seconds to load since like 1.0. KDE 3.2 and 3.3 both take about 5-6 seconds to load completly on an average computer, while gnome takes a few seconds more, say 7-8 seconds. If you like xfce4 thats cool, but I would never suggest it to anyone even with a really old computer. Its ugly to look at, hard to find anything and just doesn't get the job done.
