Suse kernal or maybe not

Hello

I'm running Suse 9.2. Did a fresh install. Yeah, same old, same old. I want to install my ATI drivers.

As far as I know Suse 9.2 uses xorg. So I downloaded the Xorg drivers from ATI.

Can I just install the drivers or do I absolutely have to install a new kernal?

Regards

If your system does not meet the prereqs, for any reason, or you decide to ignore dependencies(both of which you can do) you risk massive system inconsistency, and even full system failure. It doesn't have to be that bad, it might work just fine. But with a kernel requirement, it probably means there were things added with the kernel version they mention, that old ones didn't have, which likely means, you do need it. What might happen without meeting it? Could be just slower to run, maybe missing a feature or two, or it could halt the system entirely. So certainly you can, and if you don't mind trying it out with a high percentage chance of needing to reinstall, then do try it out. But under normal circumstances, you probably wou;dn't want to risk it.

You need at least the 2.6.x kernel, which I believe SuSE 9.2 has. If not, you can update it before installing the drivers. You'll need to have gcc, make, and kernel-source of your current kernel installed as well for the installer program to work.

Then of course you have to run flgxrconfig.

I used the current ATI drivers on my installation of 9.2 before upgrading to 10.0, and they worked fine. I had kept the kernel up-to-date, which is the only variable I'm not certain about.

I got the ATI drivers installed somehow. At first everything got f$#ked up and I was left with just a console. I was in such a hurry I can't even remember what I did, but I eventually got into Suse, installed Quake and it works. The weird thing is, I can't run glxgears?

Regards
