Originally posted by RoaCh Of DisCor I installed it as well...all went fine..except my mouse stopped working! I was trying to get the middle scroll wheel to work..but then my mouse totally wont work in suse at all. Any idea whats wrong? It looks fine in the xorg.conf...i'll post it in a few moments, right now i'm on winblows. I may run the suse recovery thing.
I've had some mouse dieing problems with 9.3 as well. A reinstall made all well but I had other problems that may have come from trying to edit with OOo2.0b Impress. I've found in general, the best way to configure any hardware on SuSE is with Yast.
Originally posted by Paridoth ...as you can see i now have an ip adress, yay, however, still no internet -.- what am i doing wrong?
The first thing I see is that your subnet mask is a Class C mask, but your IP address is a Class A address. The two don't match up. When your system tries to determine if a particular network packet is destined for the Internet or your local network, it's going to get confused. The subnet mask is what tells your computer if it needs to send your data to the local network or to the default gateway (which is your router).
Did you hand configure this in, or did your machine get this from a DHCP server?
im no longer connected to my router, ive disconected it and hooked directly up to my cable modem.
and this is from the dhcp, although i did try to "handjam" it in at one point, but i switched it back to dhcp in the configure button menu window thinger =P
Okay, then I'm forced to ask another silly question. Did you plug it into the network port on the cable modem, or did you plug it in to the USB port? If memory serves, I believe if you plan to connect the cable modem directly to the computer, you have to do it through the USB port. I don't think it's going to work by plugging into the ethernet port on the modem.
I could be wrong.
What brand is your cable modem? I looked back through the posts, but didn't see a reference to it.
its a linksys, and its conected via an ethernet cable.
I always have it pluged into my comptuer via the ethernet cable, im using it on windows right now posting this via the ethernet cable, do you think i should plug it into the usb port instead? or should i just hook my router back up, i need to do that anyways, as theres someone who needs the internet as well, i just figured i would cut out the middle man in case it was the problem.
I would recommend that you use the ethernet interface. Using the usb interface is difficult to setup. The usbnet adds an additional layer that you probably want to avoid. One thing to check is whether you entered a hostname in the NIC card setup. If you make a change, to the hostname, remember to restart kde.
If you are using a linksys cable router, It has a web interface at 192.168.1.1
By default, leave the username blank and enter 'admin' as the password.
Look under the DHCP clients for the client table. Does your computer show up. If you are using DHCP, your address should be in the 192.168.1.xxx range, starting at 192.168.1.100 and on up for each additional host.
For SuSE, you can restart the network (as root) with the command 'rcnetwork' restart.
----
The 'chmod' command won't work for usb drives. This is because they use the FAT32 filesystem.
When manually mounting a usb drive, you could use the 'uid=' and 'gid=' options. ( See the mount manpage ) This would make you the owner of the drive. Another option is to use the 'user' option and 'umask=000' option. This would give full access to everyone. However your system is using the hotplug system to mount the drive, and mounting it manually could interfere.
Try looking in the /media directory. What are all of the names in there? It may be mounted under a name that looks like 'file:/media/usb-201045736:0:0:0p1'
From the console, as root, can you list the usb-drive? If there is a problem with the file-system, and it can't mount, you will see the problems that you have.
ok im hooked into the outer now, here are some screen shots of my network cards options, this is all latin to me so tell me if theres something wrong here. i just dont understand what im missing, the router is dhcp enabled and suse is set for dhcp, what could be going wrong here?
anything else you need, like more screenshots of my router settings, (theres already some on this thread)
---------------------------------------
the usb hardrive is an ntfs file system, and theres a screenshot of my media folder in one of my earleir posts, i can repost the link if you want.
im not sure if this matters but when i try to get into my router via a web browser while im using suse i cant, while i can when im using windows (as well as internet btw)
I'm new here and I'm having the same trouble you are with my external usb hdd (ntfs partition). For now I'm just using an su and accessing my files through a console. But it's getting quite tiring. Today I tried a USB stick I have which has been formated as FAT32. Suprisingly it worked without a problem so it possibly has to do with ntfs partition automount.
As for your internet access I think you've got to put your router IP address as the default gateway. You'll find that under the routing congiguration. At least that's what I've done. You could also try using a static IP on your computer for your network as that might also help.
Hope this helps
I could also mount my drive in Suse 9.2. I don't know what they've done to change it.
From what I've seen our network configurations are quite similar. So I'll just tell you what I've put down in my settings.
On the Network Address setup page I've chosen a static IP using 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Under Host Name and Name Server Configuration I've kept the host name as "linux" and the domain name as "MSHOME".
If your router can act like a DNS server put 192.168.1.1 in the Name Server 1 box. Otherwise use the your ISP's servers. Domain search 1 is again "MSHOME".
Under the routing configuration, as I've said before I've put my router's IP 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway.
Under the Detailed Network Card Settings the Firewall zone is set to external zone. This could also cause problems.
Another thing you could try is disabling the firewall completely from the Secutiy and Users tab in YaST or stopping it temporarily to see if it's at fault.
Have you tried pinging your router at all to see if it replies? "ping 192.168.1.1".
~sigh~ nothing, nada, zip, gah this suks, seems odd that it would bet his complicated, which shows that ive probly done something horribley wrong -.-. im guna start a new thread, take some new screenies, and keep them organized and stuffs, so keep a look out for it, ill post it after i clean install a new suse adn take screen shots of the virgin settings and take some screenshot of my windows settings that for some reason work perfectly without me having to tuch anything.
