try typing 'yast' :s

Just type yast (or yast2, they are the same thing) in a root virtual terminal. It will use an ncurses interface.

thank god i found this thread...i've been having the same issues since I've installed suse 9.3 a few months ago. the gray cruddy login has been pissing me off to no end too.

there is also a YOU patch that addresses the problem (a bug that disables and did not re-enable KDE wm when SAX2 was used to update video). invoking SAX2, or resinstalling Suse 9.3, can recreate the problem if the patch is not applied.

I had the same problem. to fix it I had to login to that cruddy grey screen. Then right mouse to get a menu, then there was a shell option (not sure what the option was called XShell or Xterm or something).

Then you can change to superuser with

su

then run Yast with

Yast

When that loads up go into the option System and /etc/sysconfig Editor
Now select Desktop and you will get a load of options about all sorts, and now you should be able to change the display and desktop managers
