SuSe 8.1 pro

Hi all,

I was wandering through town recently, when in a charity shop I saw a pristeen copy of suse 8.1 professional for the princely sum of £3.00. Needless to say I thought, buy this now and ask questions later. I'm not so familiar with suse having been experimenting with slackware for a while, so I was just wondering wether it would be preferable to be running the older edition of suse proffesional or the 10.1 of the free download.

Thanks guys

I don't think that was a good deal. SUSE 8.1 is quite an old version without support and no more security updates. Even 9.1 has been moved to the "discontinued" folder by now. It may be interesting to run it on older hardware, but I can't imagine that it fully supports modern systems.

Maybe you've been mislead by the "Professional" tag. Only very few software in "free" SUSE distributions is not available. Even if certain packages are not available on the installation medium, they can be installed from online sources in most cases.

If you'd like to try SUSE on modern hardware, I suggest you try 10.0 or 10.1 from opensuse.org

Thanks Abisco00,

seems like you saved me a wasted installation. I knew it was a gamble because I don't know suse too well but at least for that money I haven't really lost too much.
