The delays are due to the XGL stuff thats being implemented in Suse 10.1. It definitely will be released in the next few weeks because the development releases were upgraded to release candidate status.

You have to see the Roadmap for Suse 10.1 in the openSuSE website http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap

Tomorrow the RC3 will be released, probably there will be a RC4 to polish the last bugs and after that the Final Release or the Final Goldmaster, as they call it, will be ready. That means that we have to wait two or three more weeks.

SuSE 10.1 is very promising, it'll be worth to wait a little bit more.

For anybody who's upset about this, at least it's not as bad as Microsoft delaying their Vista release by 12 months.

12 Months? The next MS OS was supposed to be released 2 YEARS AGO.

As for 10.1 being released, I would much rather then delay it a few more weeks, and work on getting the Intel i810 chipset bug fixed

Release has been delayed because of the new package manager called libzypp, which combines Yast and red carpet services. XGL is mainly for testing, it can be used, but it won't be installed as default. With the upcoming suse 10.2 and KDE4 we will probably see what it really can do.

The libzypp implementation has been a really tough process and with RC3 they still found out a new major bug :
"YaST2 does not show the package description/summary for a lot of packages"

Ha, looks like Linux beat Windows to all the same features.
With XGL and a complete Mono system in a couple of years, there really won't be any reason for anybody not to switch.

I tried the rc releases and for some reason I really don't like the new package manager. It was really slow and was constantly refreshing itself. Anyway, I will try it again once the stable release is out.

What's wrong with 10.0?

Will us current 10.0 users be able to easily 'upgrade' to 10.1? I'm sure this question has been asked 100x.

So far I've been doing both upgrades and fresh installs and haven't had any problems, which is kind of surprising with some of the major package updates. At the moment I'm building RC3 iso so I'll see if there is much improvement. Especially with libzypp. I'm not happy with it at all.

actually i am a mandriva user right now so i do not want to switch to suse and after a few days i find a new version is out

that happened with mandrake 10 an mandriva 2005 it was released before i can even finish my personal configurations and i didn't move to the new version until 2006 was released

anyway i am still waiting and i shall wait until a new version of either suse or mandriva is released

have a nice time everybody

Yep, the new package manager isn't as good as I hoped. Running it over mono makes it use too much memory and cpu time plus the new programs (ZEN/RUG) aren't really good at all.
There are no download rates and progress bars anywhere...

I use smart. I have found out it was the only way to update from beta to a next one using factory.
Yast takes now ages to load and it just doesn't feel as userfriendly as it was in the past.

Well the rest of the distro is really looking promising. NetworkManager is something that I have been waiting for years and now finally they offer good solution for switching networks quickly.
