Suse's philosphy on mounting and other burning questions ;-

I installed a dvdburner and removed a cdwriter how can I make everything nicey nicey with Suse in terms of config files and such.

Here is what I have done so far
I added my user to the cdrom group(did that on initial suse install)

I created a group called burning for K3b and added my user to it
Question? Should the burning group be created as a local or system group?

I went into yast-->hardware-->cd-rom drives and I have:

Code:
name--------------------------------------device----------------------------------------link---------------------------------------mountpoint

Generic DVD dual max------------dev/hdc-------------------------------------------------------
Yamaha crw2100e-------------------dev/hdc---------------------------------------------------------
Generic DVD dual max-------------dev/hdc---------------------------------------------------
Question? why are there 2 entries for the dvd burner and why is the cd burner still listed how can I get rid of it
____________________________________________________________________
Anyways..clicking the add button while on the generic dvd burner gives:

Code:
name--------------------------------------device----------------------------------------link---------------------------------------mountpoint

Generic DVD dual max------------dev/hdc---------------------------/dvd/dvdrecorder---------------------------/media/dvdrecorder
Yamaha crw2100e-------------------dev/hdc---------------------------------------------------------
Generic DVD dual max-------------dev/hdc-------------------------------------------
Problems:

the mountpoint is created although Suse never seems to mount anything there under /media/dvdrecorder.

Putting a cd in the tray usually brings up two dialog boxes one for the KDE Daemon and one for Suseplugger if I choose to open the cd its contents are shown in a window at location system:/media/hdc .I cannot find this mountpoint anywhere in the files system there is nothing in the folders under /media/...cdrecoder or dvdrecorder or xmms_audio_cd.

As root doing umount /dev/hdc gives umount: /dev/hdc: not mounted

As root doing mount /dev/hdc /media/dvdrecorder/.....gives......./dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error

I think that I am more successful burning cds in raw mode under root than user althought this might have been a media speed issue I can sometimes successfully burn media as regular user.

Here are my relevant config files sorry I didnt dmesg upon burn failures.

fstab:

Code:
/dev/hda2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda5 /home reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda6 /storage_3 reiserfs user,acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0

none /subdomain subdomainfs noauto 0 0
/dev/md0 /storage_2 reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/md1 /storage_1 reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2

/dev/dvdrecorder /media/dvdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0
If I do k3b setup I get under devices: Generic DVD dual max /dev/hdc permissions: 660 "myuser",burning

progams permissions cdrdao: 4710 root burning
cdrecord 0750 root burning
growisofs 4710 root burning

So should I remove the cdrecorder entry in the fstab?
How can I get mount to work normally in suse?

Here is a recent log from k3b when buring as regular user previous attempts in raw mode didnt work but for some reason sao worked and this writer is definitely able to write in raw mode

Thanks all for reading and comments if you have any sorry for the long post but thorough info usually helps.

I think that removing the /dev/cdrecorder entry in /etc/fstab is a good idea. Maybe you should also remove the device-link /dev/cdrecorder.

Sorry my reply has taken so long but I guess I have been in sort of denial when it comes to the issues that surround the mounting and burning of dvd's and cd's

To get everything to work right I think you have to have good knowledge of a few basic key areas and I have to admit I just kindve know a bit about each. The areas probably include:

1)permissions
2)mounting and unmounting and linux filesystems(fstab etc)
3)linking (hardlinking I think)
4)the numerous programs/scripts that k3b uses to format/erase write dvd's

Some complicating issues seem to be the automounters in suse and kde (suse plugger..hal backend? and how suse mounts them under media and my computer.)

I have numerous problems trying to burn or erase dvd's and cd's as a regular user and if I SU to root from my regular user account and start k3b that doesnt help but for some reason logging in as actual root acutally goes along way when it comes to getting things done with k3b.

My goal is to get all the permissions on devices and programs set so a group called burning can use k3b just as root seems to be able to now.

I realize that there is info out there but the amount is a bit overwhelming. I think that probably one of the biggest issues a newbie faces are the ones I am dealing with in this post.

A little help here please I am willing to start from scratch to get this right where should I start (faqs and whatnot). Also if you want to just tell me what to do that would be ok and I can work through by going backwards what is going on here.

Thanks again

Hmm I just noticed that the /dev/cdrecorder link has been recreated after I deleted it. After messing with things a bit I find I can no longer reformat rewritable dvds even as root....Help!

Truth is all I've ever done with SuSE when adding or changing CD/DVD drives was to reboot the system. Configuration is all automatic. DVD drives function with CD's as well and there's no problem linking CD and DVD functions to the same DVD device.

Maybe somebody can elaborate for me. My dvd drive can write/read both cd's and dvd's therefor there must be a link pointed at the single device for each functionality. eg. dvd, dvdrecorder,cd, cdrecoder all point to the same device??

I have loads of problems burning as user even after establishing a burning group giving it permissions and adding my users to it. As root I can get more done with the exception of formating rewritables for some reason.I have to reformat erase a dvd in windows to get it done (terrible turn of events dont you think

/dev has all of the mount points. If you open a terminal session and enter "cd /dev" then "ls -l cd*" and then "ls -l dvd*" you see all those mount points and the physical device they link to as in:

fragos@Geo:/dev> ls -l cd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-05-23 05:40 cdrecorder -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-05-23 05:40 cdrom -> hdd
fragos@Geo:/dev> ls -l dvd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-05-23 05:40 dvd -> hdd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-05-23 05:40 dvdrecorder -> hdc

in my example I've two devices, hdc is a DVD RW and hdd is a DVD ROM

If I goto YAST---->hardware---->cd drives an old yamaha writer which I have long since removed physically from the system is still listed as a detectable device.Don't know if this might cause any problems though there seems to be no links to it.

If you look at my fstab(first post) I noticed that it does'nt seem to list hdc. Should I put it in there? I have noticed that in my k3b logs that it says something about accessing the device as hdc and something about that not being the default behaviour.

I noticed that I can put media in the drive and this media is automounted. The medias files are usually mounted to /media/"something". I have the desktop set up to show an icon when the drive has mounted media and clicking on the icon should cause it to become unmounted but I get the error umount: only root can do that.

Any advice then. Again I am hoping to get everything set up properly so regular users who are part of the burning group can burn everthing.

Currently regular users seem to be able to burn at least cd's but I noticed that the device buffer actually runs dry then refills and continues burning as opposed to when root burns both the device buffer and the fifo buffer are hardly affected, weird huh?

hdc has always been what I've seen for a single CD/DVD in the last four SuSE releases. To be honest, the only time I've touched the fstab was during partitioning hard disk and I let the partitioner do it.

dasbooter: neither hdc or hdd which are associated with my DVD drives are in my fstab. They function perfectly that way.
