ssh service start & enable ?

I don't seem to be able to get ssh service running on suse 10.x. I have done all the setup I can think of but its still not working.

Have you checked the logs for errors?
Is the service running but not granting access?

You have to check whether the service is running and that you have opened any required ports in the firewall.
