Hi All,

I was able to connect my linux box to a windows shared printer last night. Dizzy from my technical prowess, and having a 72GB SCSI disk sitting on my little Suse 10.0 PC315 server with nothing on it, I decided to fire up samba and make it available for use from my Window XP machine.

All went well, I can see the share from windows - but when I try to connect, I am asked for a userid and password? I have tried entering root and my root password but no luck.

I have enabled Samba server in firewall for internal and external.

I clicked on the drive icon and made it 'anyone can read and write to this device'.

I have had a trawl about the net and the forums but cannot find anything obvious.

Am I missing an additional configuration step?

I believe you need to run 'smbpasswd -a newuser' as root on the server to add the users you want to allow to connect from the windoze machines. There is a man page if you need more information.

I installed Swat on the server. It provides a nice interface for many samba functions, and shows the doc. ( Not required, but a nice touch for administration ).

smbpasswd will prompt you for a new password. The user can use the same command to change the password after the admin gives the user the first password.

I did as you suggested but still no luck.
I think it is linux user permissions / security that is the sticking point.
I have found a whole section on samba in my old Suse 9.2 Admin manual and will read up on it.

As access from Linux to windows shares was such a breeze, I did not expect it to be more complicated (and probably more secure) the other way around.
