Remote Administration Problems - SuSe Linux 10

I seem to be having a problem with remote administration.

I turn it on from YAST -> Network Services -> Remote Administration.

I get a message to say i must restart the display manager for settings to come into effect. (which i did)

It also says restarting the X Server is not enough.

I have had Remote Admin working before, but i re-installed Suse 10 and since this i can't get it working

I need to be able to log-on from across my LAN.

Thanks for looking.

Using that option you get a different session, is that what you're looking for? As opposed to VNC and taking control of the existing session?

If you're doing Remote Administration it is for a new session.
To verify the service is working correctly, did you open the port in the firewall? Can you go to a console and type "netstat -an" and scroll to the top and you should see what ports are listening. Something like 0.0.0.0:5901 is what you should see. Please report back.

Thanks

netstat -ntap would be easier here ... no scrolling up. you would have to do that on the machine your trying to administer though. it will just list what services are running and waiting for a connection and where they are looking for a connection, also shows active connections.

what happens when u try to connect to it?

you can restart the run-level if restarting the xserver isnt enough.
from a terminal in x do:
init 3
let it change run-levels and then login to the console and run:
init 5

if you get your remote x connections working the above will kill the connection though. you would have to walk over to the box and change back to run-level 5 to get your remote x administration back. a better option might be ssh and xforwarding but just a thought.

If you go into Sax2 you can turn on VNC and that will keep the same session. Its up to you if you want VNC for a new session or existing one.

I'm glad you're enjoying Linux. I have ever since I switched. Stuff is annoying when it doesnt work correctly, but I feel like I have more control over my OS and I have more options and things to do. More versatile.
