Recover var partition

Hello there
I use Suse Linux Enterprise server 10. While testing cfdisk command, I deleted my /var partition mistakenly and write the changes.
I have created 3 partitions on my hard disk, boot, swap and var.
Now I can use my Linux but Gnome is disabled.
Some features of yast are also disabled.
Is there any way to recover this lost partition?
By the way I have copied al files and folders from /var partition of the same system but it still doesn't work.
Any idea?

Hi, Welcome to LQ!
===============================================================================
LQ has a fantastic search function that may save you time waiting for an answer to a popular question.

With over 3 million posts to search it's possible the answer has been given.
===============================================================================

You are gonna have problems using some of the standard apps (like yast) if your system can't find /var/lib/...

I suggest ubcd or system recovery, both live cd's.

They have tools for recovering data, dd_rhelp dd_rescue, and or testdisk photorec.

There are others, but I know these two work.

One other thing you might try is to use the suse install cd and "begin" a new install and after you have set the partitions, cold reboot, just before formatting.

Hopefully that will set the mount point back to where it was.

You may also then copy the data back to the /var partition.

Another thing you might try is slax. A bootable flash-drive OS,

which will give you most of the standard tools, to copy back your data.

I hope this helps you, I'm guessing that the most important data would be in /var/www (being a server)

Regards Glenn

Recover /var partition

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Automatic and custom repair didn’t work.
But when I start a new installation and mount the partition and restart, it works.
Of course after that I delete and create that partition in cfdisk again. I had copy the proper files and directories before.
Amazing but it works
By the way I don’t have www in /var partition.
