orphaned processes or maybe rebooting without restore?

I think I have orphaned processes. I would like them to go away but I can't tell which they might be.

Rebooting without bringing them back would be OK. Is there a way to Boot with nothing being brought back in?

SUSE 11.1 KDE 4

Thanks

The machine slows down. I can tell where some of that comes from. Ebay adds are not well behaved. The ebay typing aids are not well behaved. A bunch of other sites are not well behaved. Those are easy to spot. Drop those processes and it becomes faster. Kaffeine sometimes leaves instances of itself. Those are easy to spot. They can sometimes remain through the boot process.

The system load shows more activity than I can account for. I used to be able to get it down to about nothin. Not anymore.

The process table shows a bunch of duplicate names. Some I can tell belong. Some I have doubts about. Killing processes at random has results that occasionally require reboot.

I would like to be able to come up clean to flush out the old stuff.

Is there a way. I have tried searching. I think it should be a boot option. I have looked at the actions on the boot. Failsafe does not have the resume setting. Is that the way to go?
