MS Intellimouse 4 Explorer

Hi Folks

I have a MS IM 4 and want to know if anybody knows how to get the tilting wheel to work.

I have read: w w w .linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=371672&perpage=15&pagenumber=2 but it obviously about a non tilt-wheel one.

Sorry had to take the link apart.

I reckon i would need 9 buttons instead of 7 and modify the xmodmap command.

The biggest Problem is figuring out a way to bind the two extra "buttons" that represent the tilt to a meaningfull command like scrolling horizontally or something to the like.

I'm new to Linux. Any help appreciated. Thanks a lot

I have been fiddlign with that as well, to little success as yet I am afraid. I believe someone in another thread mentioned it was probably software controlled button emulation, in which case it will require a vast amount more than just an xmodmap and adding 2 buttons. Though, I highly doubt it isn't possible as I have even found that SuSE comes with some packages for laptops which allow for adding to the number of mouse buttons/functions and the same with keyboards. So reasonably speaking, it should be possible, and possible to map all your special keyboard keys, as well. It is just a matter of how, and I am afraid I am not up to that task, as yet. I am too new to the linux scene, and worse, too inexperienced with its working. I also don't have the time for awhile to try and get enough info on it. But it is possible. This I know.

Hmm Noone got an idea?

I've been playing around with it and xev doesn't even recognize the buttons as opposed to the other seven. Could this be a limitation of the ExplorerPS/2 protocol? I have been playing with them when i was trying to get the 7 other buttons to work and found that for example with only the protocol changed to PS/2 only 3 of the 7 worked.

Could there be some specialized protocol that i could use for the task?

Though I have not tried it, there are not many Protocols with more than 7 buttons... but according to the 8D Scroll Mouse, you can map 4 buttons to "stick" or scroll wheel.
Quote:
ScrollMouse, also known as GyroMouse, has a "stick" similar to IBM ScrollPoint. The stick movement is recognized as the Z axis motion. You can push the stick to right and left, as well as forward and backward. Give four numbers to ZAxisMapping option to map movement along all these four directions to button actions.
It may only work under the "IMPS/2" protocol. It is supposed to work with the serial and PS/2 port on supporting OSes.
It would be done simliar to normal, but the zaxismapping would be something like "4 5 6 7" rather than just "4 5".
