Is it possible to migrate from Intel to AMD without reinstalling?

I have SuSE 9.1 Professional installed on a Pentium III machine, and I'm going to buy an AMD Sempron machine.

My problem is that I don't want to make a new install and migrate data, so I would like to know if I move my hard disk to the new machine SuSE will detect the new hardware and install appropiate software/modules, or in the worst case, if would be enough upgrading the system to detect new hardware.

Thanks in advance.

AMD sempron and P3 processors are both x86 processors, so you should be able to switch straight over.

To add to the above answer you can run into problems if you have compiled a kernel specific to your hardware in your case a P3 but if you are just running the generic install kernel you should be fine. There may be minor things you may need to do like making sure that the modules for your chipset on the new board get loaded if they are not autodetected.

The kernel is the generic installed by SuSE (and updated via YOU). I'll see how SuSE behaves with the new hardware and if all of it is detected properly.

Thank you HappyTux.

Thumbs up

I've finally migrated my hard disks to the new PC, and the only strange thing that happened is that my hard disks and DVD R/W were named as hda to hdd in the old PC, but in the new one SuSE names them from hde to hdh, so I had to repair the existing installation with the installation DVD. All went OK.

I've checked the BIOS settings for something strange related with the hard disks, but found nothing.

Wen SuSE booted up, automatically detected and installed the new hardware.
