Silent Splash won't work on my LCD ...

UPDATE!!!

now after some research and help from users here I am updating this ...

The Silent Boot Splash on my SUSE 9.3 wont work on my Dell LCD (gives cant display video mode error, works fine if I plug in my CRT).

I have tried other res/color options like : 0x311 0x314 (DEFAULT 0x317) 0x31A in /grub/menu.lst ... 0x317 is ok on my CRT not LCD and all the others go into verbose mode on my LCD.

Any Ideas ????

Thx in advance ...

open up a command terminal and su into root then run the mkinitrd -s (new size) command that should set your boot resolution.

> su
Password:
# mkinitrd -s 1280x1024
# exit
# exit

reboot and see what happens. What your doing is when the system boots, it boots from a boot image, and to have the graphical boot you have load the graphic into the boot image, if I can remember correctly the boot image also has the screen resolution that will be used until the Xorg.conf file can be read. Using the -s option changes the size.

hope this helps, if it doesn't let us know and we may be able to come up with another solution.

I have not tried what you said yet -- BUT -- I did this and I got somewhat what I was looking for ...

ps .. Remember Im a noob just looking around and learning ....

I noticed that if I choose the "safe mode" in grub I can see the text interface on boot but without the GUI component visable on the text part of boot I see on my CRT.

I opened an editor and looked at /boot/grub/menu.lst .. I noticed that the normal boot option had vga=0x317 and Safe had it set to vga=normal so I edited the normal boot section to vga=normal and it worked, vga=extended works also.

But I lack the GUI component on boot -- anymore ideas ???

Im going to try your option now ... Thanks again for your help

UPDATE ...

I found this online as options for the vga=XXXX option for /boot/grub/menu.lst :

| 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
----+-------------------------------------
256 | 0x301 0x303 0x305 0x307
32k | 0x310 0x313 0x316 0x319
64k | 0x311 0x314 0x317 0x31A
16M | 0x312 0x315 0x318 0x31B

I have tried 0x305, 0x318, 0x314 and all allow me to see the text boot part ...

But It will not allow me to see the GUI boot screens (the one that says "init hardware" "esc" for more info)

Any Ideas ????

I believe what I am looking to get working is called "Silent Boot Option"

So far I still have had no luck
