I need help fast resucuing SUSE 9.2

I'm trying to resuce Suse 9.2 and get a "Rescue login". I don't remember setting up any sort of login for Rescue. I've tried su and other login's and passwords'....Help! I need my data! It happened because someone told me that I could install XP back onto my computer on my other HD and then go through the "Rescue" function and recover boot info. HELP!!!

do a google search for "computer first aid using knoppix".
That should help.
Using knoppix you can run linux from a cd and get access to all your data.

Boot from the CD or DVD that you installed from and you should see the rescue option.
What's happened is your windows install wrote over your MBR. You just need to reinstall
your boot manager(grub).

I tried the rescue option and got a login option. Which log in do I use?

Thanks, Davholla. As a last resort to getting my information, that will do nicely. I'm just hoping that I can still recover using the rescue option. I just didn't expect a login to do it and su doesn't do it.
I can put in root and it tells me when my last login was. Don't know what to do after that.

I hope I understood your problem: when you boot Linux, you don't get into the system, but end up at the rescue login?

Usually this happens when the filesystem in mounted read-only due to problems with mounting the root partition (errors in /etc/fstab, corrupted filesystem). You can try to load the repair (not 'rescue') system from your boot CD: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...em-Repair.html

Yes, what I did was install XP back onto my computer on a different HD than my Suse install. I thought I could just boot with my Suse disk afterwards and repair it as I was told I could....but I don't know what login and password they are looking for at the prompt. I tried my root and my other standard pass....Nodda!

Thanks for your help guys. I didn't realize I had to go into installation first before I could get into the repair option. Whew! I hadn't backed up my files in over a month and my wife had a whole bunch of new docs that I was sweating over. Great help from all of you!
