Use advanced options and tell it to completely reformat the drive.

You can also use Knoppix to shred it, or GParted to reformat everything.

Oh well, with knoppix, run "sfdisk /dev/hda" as root and erase the partition. Don,t create any... save and exit. The OpenSUSE installer will do the rest.

sfdisk command

I tried to use sfdisk but I think I dont use the right command.

If I do:

sfdisk /dev/hda

I got this message and I dont know what to do.

Quote:
root@ttyp0[~]# sfdisk /dev/hda
Checking that no-one is using this disk right now ...
OK

Disk /dev/hda: 4866 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Old situation:
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot Start End #cyls #blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 0+ 4864 4865- 39078081 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
/dev/hda3 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
/dev/hda4 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
Input in the following format; absent fields get a default value.
<start> <size> <type [E,S,L,X,hex]> <bootable [-,*]> <c,h,s> <c,h,s>
Usually you only need to specify <start> and <size> (and perhaps <type>).

/dev/hda1 :

I can't believe the installer won't allow you to fix this.

sfdisk has its uses, but not here. Get out of that - <ctrl><c> should do it. Try fdisk - hit <enter> after each line below.
Code:
fdisk /dev/hda
d
1
w
q
(if you hit <m> at any time you'll see the menu of commands to see what you're doing with those commands).
Re-do the install.

sfdisk(1) has four (main) uses: list the size of a partition, list the partitions on a device, check the partitions on a device, and - very dangerous - repartition a device.

Repartitioning is one of the main uses... however, the s in front was a typo: sorry.

Every Linux I've put in I've been able to go into "expert mode" or "custom partitioning scheme" or something like that (it often prompts) and then telling it to delete all existing partitions and adding partitions the way I want. A small-but-sizable (about a gig) swap partition and a big / (root) partition usually works well as a starting point. I'm bad to make the root partition about 5-10 gigs and then the rest I'd make /home. "Take-over hard disk" is another typical option I've seen, and it does essentially what it says--takes over the hard disk and kicks Windows out. Muah-ha-ha-ha!

Problem with X

Thanks for your help.

Now my partitions are ok.

But I have a new problem.

When I started to install Suse I got this message:

Quote:
Your computer does not fulfill all requirement for a graphical installation. There is less than 96mb memory or the X server could not be started.

As a fallback, the text front-end of Yast will guide you trhought the installation.
Next I installed the 3 first CD of Suse.

It never ask me to create the admin password.

The computer rebooted and I got this message:

Quote:
The greater application appear to be crashing. Attemting to use a different one.
On 3 try to hit ok.

one time I got a black screen and the others times I entered in text console and it asked me the user and password than I dont have.

Can you help me again please?

thanks!

Wow, this is stressing my French...

CPU: Intel Pentium IIIE, 866 MHz
(A gigabyte mobo, intel chipset - so far so good)

Mémoire système [ TRIAL VERSION ] ... a trial version memory system???

HDD: 30Gig Maxtor
OPT: 32x CD-ROM

need...

RAM (get this off BIOS or read it off the RAM cards)

Another Thing... using knoppix, open a terminal and enter

lspci
fdisk -l

... post the resulting output. While you are there, try running fsck on those partitions you created.

It should be compatible, but it looks like you may be buying some RAM.

I would assume that, with a Pentium 3, he'd have at least 128MB on a bad day.
