How To Get Data Using Knoppix CD ..SUSE Install Failed

Run Down On Problem.

Have IBM Thinkpad T41. Running XP

Went to install SUSE 9.1 Personal. Now have GRUB Error, and it is as if SUSE was never full installed.

Need SUSE off my machine and just do a fresh install of XP...problem..I need several critical files on my machine.

I have a Knoppix CD. I can't seem to email the files to myself which I thought would be a solution. It will not allow me to attach the file.

The solution I need is using the Knoppix CD to retrieve the files I need. I am new so my knowledge is less than a I would like when it comes to matters such as this.

I am hoping there is a simple solution I just have not thought off. Any help would greatly be apprecicated.

Don't despair, there are a number of ways!

Did you mount the drive/partition your files are in before you tried to attach them?

1st use usb key chain memory stick to copy files or burn them to CD. In knoppix you may have to mount drives/partitions and CD drive 1st.

2nd boot from winxp install disk, choose repair, fixmbr... boot to winxp. May want to google for this to feel better. I'd try to save them as above 1st.

3rd use partition magic, resize partition, make a fat partition, boot into knoppix, mount partition, copy files to fat partition, then reinstall xp but don't let it use the fat partition.

I'm sure there are others that will come to your help, good luck!

PS: I do believe that in suse 9.1 there is a problem with parted which screws up the xp partition. I also think that there is a fix; look in suse portal for suse 9.1 parted.
