Flash-plugin update failure

Hi,

Dell Optiplex Quad 8Mb Suse 42.2

Running latest KDE

I get a notification that Software Updates are available.

I've had great problems but I have narrowed it down to:

Flash-plugin (25.0.0.127-release)

I can select or deselect this update but, as an aside, I cant deselect all the waiting updates in one go! I have to go to each box and deselect it.

When there are thirty or more and you don't know which one is screwing everything up it is a PITA!

the failure of this plugin update can and has caused the system to freeze.

I've left it for hours but eventually had to hold the off button for three or four days and then rebooted.

The KDE error message cant be copied nor can the rather nice way Linux has of allowing reproduction of the text under the highlight work.

So now, I have just the one update pending.

Flash-plugin (25.0.0.127-release)

Text tells me that the uploading of the packages and the downloading has started but shortly after I get a fleeting message:

"An internal system error has occurred. A problem that we were not expecting has occurred.
Please report this bug with the error description."

Succinct eh?

Can you help me report this bug and where to find the error description and to whom it should be reported please?

Regards

Chris

What's the output of "zypper lr -u" (prefixed by sudo or at a root prompt) for you?

Hi wagscat123,

It gives me this:

Code:
crb999@linux-dxa1:~> zypper lr -u

Hey!

This is the latest LEAP linux as far as I am aware, there is a problem with updates that need to be reported but it seems nobody knows who what why or where!

Am I in the wrong area?

Is there a better place to ask this question and at the same time identify some weaknesses of the update procedure and software?

Regards

Chris

Sorry for the slow response - this is the right place for anything SUSE/openSUSE. Once upon a glorious time there was just openSUSE, before it broke into a radical Tumbleweed and a reactionary Leap....

Oops - zypper lr is one of the few that doesn't require a root prompt.

I myself haven't had any trouble with updating it - maybe try "zypper rm flash-plugin" then "zypper in --from 1 flash-plugin". If that doesn't work, zypper will at least give you more a more helpful output.

Thanks wagscat123, I'll certainly give that a go and report back here but clearly the kde updater has some rather unpleasant anomalies which I would like to report and explore further.

How can I do that?

Does this error occur using software updates? I am running Leap4.2 and occasionally get similar update problems. However, if I go to YAST, use Software Management and do the updates by hand, the problem goes away. Similar to using zypper, but automated.

Hi Peveral,

Yes, system updates from KDE.

I've just clicked on Show hidden icons > notifications on the task bar which tells me that there are no new notifications but when I click it it tells me that I have 14 Software updates!

The first of these is the one causing trouble. The flash plugin.

I'm going to try the suggestion from wagscat123 with zypper. but I'll look at yast too! Thanks

But still guys and gals, who is this to be reported to?

Hi All,

I did the Flash update!

I removed what was there with zypper and used Yast to update flash-plugin, I then installed a further 15 updates 6 with Yast as described by Peveral, fine, then did those that remained with the gui that I have been complaining about. Also fine.

The system asked me to reort the unexpected error, and, unexpectedly, nobody seems to know how that may be done.

Ah well, early days eh?

Thanks all.

I won't close this yet

"An internal system error has occurred. A problem that we were not expecting has occurred.
Please report this bug with the error description."

This remains to be answered.

I've seen all kinds of goofy things with the KDE updater, at least since 12.2, and have generally stuck with zypper or YaST's online update (YOU). If no one else around here knows specifically, there's always the openSUSE fora (forums.opensuse.org). It could also be a KDE thing - KDE has all of its fora and bug reporting things as well.

For me personally, I find a daily "zypper up" to be the path of least resistance.

I get my flash plugin here

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Version 25.0.0.127

if you use tar just untar and cp or move .so into the plugins folders or use the rpm, deb etc.. it has a lot to pick from for Linux.

as far as bug reporting I'd get a hold of who ever maintains whatever distro your using ... google them, or figure out a work around or change distros ..

Thanks guys''gals,

Upward and Onward.

BWuser-x I'm not really familiar with tar and that kind of installation or update yet.

I've been totally stymied at the moment trying to install and run Python 3.

Steep learning curve.

It is as simple as I said - just untar it remove the flash.x.x.so and place it in the ~/.mozilla/plugins folder - done - this is for web browser -- I don't play with snakes so have fun

To extract any archived or compressed file, tar. zip, rar, gzip, tar.gzip. etc, the easiest way is to display the file list in Dolphin, right click on the file and select extract. Unless you know it is only a single file, it is safest to choose the bottom option, autodetect subfolder. That way the system chooses the right extraction mechanism.
