I'm using Suse 10.0 with the Gnome desktop. I've attached and set up a Diamond media 56K external modem which is accessed through /dev/ttyS0.
The modem is correctly identified in the hardware manager and I've set it up through YAST network devices ok.
The modem works and I can access and control it with MiniCom in a terminal window. But if I try to connect through the desk top network connections tab, nothing happens. The modem is set up as modem0 but whilst the link modem -> /dev/ttyS0 exists there is no link for modem0 -> modem. I've tried creating the link manually, in a terminal window with SU privilages, but still no joy, if I do a ls command after creating the link, apparently successfully, the link is still not present. After I remake the modem0 -> modem link a corresponding link appears in my Home directory but I get the message that the link is broken and when I right click the icon, the icon disappears.
I've also tried connecting an old USR external modem and with the same results, though with a previous install this I had absolutely no problem.
One other interesting problem is that if I log in as root the modem is not even listed on the network tab, even after I set it up again in YAST.
