[SuSE 9.1] ATi driver -> login trouble

I downloaded the rpm's from here:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../fglrx/3.14.1/

I followed the readme. In the end you have to setup SaX2 and test you settings, they were OK. When I am setting up SaX2 and setting up the monitor with refreshrates and all, I press Test and the "test" screen comes up. I have to setup the monitor horizontally and vertically alignments etc, because SaX2 set the screen to 90Hz, a new mode... When I reboot X, after I log in and the KDEbootscreenthingy is at 100%, X logs out and I have to log in again! But then, it logs me out AGAIN, and AGAIN etc etc...

So I got to failsafe mode and replaced the XF86Config with the XF86Config.sax2backup (or something similar) and now all works OK. The only thing I modified in XF86Config was
Code:
Load "dri"
in de Modules section. Is that the problem?

Here is the readme:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../3.14.1/README

Hello 4hp,

maype you find a solution at pcpitstop .
There is a forum thread called "ATI Driver Installation for Suse 9.1 Pro or Personal Users" from psicon.

Hope it helps!

Greets, pete

Maybe I can help you, when I´m at home again. I´m here at work - with no ATI

I tried that guide, it's basically the same as the README Suse offers.

The problem persists, after configuring monitor with sax2 I can login, but then X crashes (due to an unexpected error (in error log)) and I have to login again only to see X crash again.

I've tried removing the line:
Code:
 Load "dri"
, X does not crash but then no hardware acceleration.

When I leave Load "dri" in the XF86Config file and set UseInternalAGPGART from "no" to "yes", no hardware acceleration.

Darn! Must..get...this...to...work!

Radeon module not good enough for me

BTW: The XF86Config mentioned in this post is the one SaX2 created.

Yay!

I got it to work.

Just DON'T use SaX2, use fglrxconfig instead!
