volume buttons on my laptop


Does anyone have any ideas as how to get the volume and mute buttons to work on my dell inspiron 8600 ???

there will likely be someone who can flat out tell you what to do with this, but i am not him. i can however try to guide you in a starting direction on how to accomplish this if noone does respond. open a terminal and type:

xev

you will notice that there is a box loggin everything you push. even your mouse. every button on a keyboard (well almost every) has a keycode. so if you push your volume buttons you will see the keycodes. write them down. from there there are several things you can do. i heard you can append your existing keyboard map and add those codes so taht they do something, or use your window manager to bind the keys to your mixer. or use alternate programs to bind the keys, like xbindkeys. i actually did the keyboard map one, but it wasnt easy at all. you might have beter luck with xbindkeys. i would google it as it is pretty self explanitory.
