Unhappy Suse 9.3 - playing dvd movies

I'm sure this has been posted on there already, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating this.

I'm having problems playing encrypted dvd's via xine in Suse 9.3. My system is an IBM T42p. So it has a DVD-RAM player.

I do have libdvdcss installed. I have installed xine via packman (using Yast ,and I even tried downloading the rpms). I also used apt-get to make sure I have the latest version (which is says I do. packman is on my list for apt)

I does play unencrypted dvd's, but it won't play any encrypted dvds.

The erros I get is:
xine: There is no mrl.

I really don't get it because I got it to work fine in my T42 laptop (work laptop) which has a DVD/CD-RW.

Any help with this would be appreciated. Cause I'm at a loss now.

Did you de-install the SUSE version of Xine first? Some report that this is required.

Yup. I uninstalled xine, kaffeine, and xine-lib. Then I installed the packman versions (including w32 codecs) and it still didn't work. I'm think it's some configuration somewhere, but I can't figure it out.

If you updated SuSE with the multimedia packs with YOU, and re/installed mplayer, kaffeine, W32codecs, xine-ui and libxine1 from packman with Yast.. and installed libdvdcss (which you've said you have) then your SuSE should be an all singing & dancing multimedia fest.

That error message only comes up when libdvdcss isn't installed as the player cannot get past the encryption to read the data, so it's a libdvdcss problem.

I'd just reinstall libdvdcss again with Yast, you can get the rpm here.

P.S. Have you also tried playing a video DVD in Mplayer?

Thanks inbob, that version of libdvdcss worked. I was using libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm, which must not be stable or something. I have not tried Mplayer, but I'm seeing more and more people recommending it. so maybe i'll give it a shot.

Thanks for your help vinbob, and thanks to everyone that posted.

Dear "Shazam27"

Here is the link of the page from you can choose the xine ( Able to Play not only DVD, but .avi, .WMV and every format) near to compatible to ur Processor and SuSE Version.

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

Read the Instructions at the beginning of the page first carefully then choose your compatible Xine Version.

Please don't forget to inform me....... did it help you or not.? ? ?

NOTE : - PUT ALL THE 4 FILES ON DESKTOP AND THEN CLICK RIGHT ON EACH AND GO TO "Actions" THEN "Install with YaST".

Please uninstall first all the xine,it's plugins and also it's Libs whic are YaST Versions.

Then , install first "xinelib'' file which you downloaded from this page.

Talking Just tried!

Another option I've just tried! While installing SuSE 9.3 DO NOT include Kaffeine and Xine and Totem. Same for Amarok. Update with YOU. Get all multimedia packs, in case you want to play some more.

Open the control center.
Click YaST modules
Click Software
Click Change Installation Source
Click Add
Select http
Put packman.iu-bremen.de in the site field
Put suse/9.3 in the path field

Install NOW Kaffeine, Xine, Totem, and Amarok with Plugins
Play whatever you with to play

Will

I found that after loading all the correct rpms, the kmplayer front end makes sure all is configured correctly. It works with both xine and mplayer. I've had the best luck telling kmplayer to use xine.

Lightbulb Playing DVD's in Linux SuSE 9.3

First i installed all the " Multimedia Option Packs" the 4 of them
from Online update in yast

the I resolved dependencies trying to install libxine1.1.1.0
by removing
xine-lib
from yast Note: when removing xine-lib it's crucial that you remove the other package
called "kaxtv" or something similar, or else you will get unresolved
dependencies.

this install all the packages you got from http://www.links2linux.de/
or where ever you can get them.

xine will then install without problems.

you have to change DMA settings to ON or something higher.
through yast hardware configuration utility. ( or you will get jumpy DVD playback)
this is what I installed

libdvdcss2 /to unscramble ecrypted DVD's
libdvdread /as the name implies
libxine1
libxine-aa
libxine-dvb
libxine1-xvmc
libXvMC
speex
W32codec-all
xine-ui

plays DVD's fine.

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/
IMHO is the best place to get the latest xine dvd support
I also use mplayer because with some dvds its better than xine and provide more codecs
kmplayer is my front end to both xine and mplayer -- best default configurations for DVD

Guys - I went through the very procedure of the

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

details and I get the

"xine: There is no mrl" in the top window bar of the xine mainscreen, and then shortly after, two error windows pop up saying

"-xine engine error- There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/' Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist."

and

"The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: not disc in drive. (dev/dvd)"

Any help would be welcome. Can I assume that unindtalling the standard xine is the same as deleting it in YaST?

I t was a while ago but, if I remember correctly I solved the same problem with the kmplayer frontend. It provides xine and mplayer configuration support and the defaults it provided fixed the MRL problem. I hope it works for you as well.

Here. It will allow you to play encrypted dvds avi wmv and all the rest.
http://www.plainfaqs.org/linux/dvdplay/index.html

Remove Kaffeine and Xine. Add guru rpm site to your media installation and disable CD as media installation in Yast. Now go to Install softwares and search "xine" Now install Kaffeine and xine from guru rpm site and voila.

Code:
Adding gururpm site:
Open Yast=>Change Media Installation=>ADD=>http=>
in server type "ftp.gwdg.de"
in Directory on server type: "pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.3"
If yours 9.1 so type 9.1 instead of 9.3
=>OK
I followed this road and now my Xine plays encrypted DVDs, divx, xvid and the kitchen sink
