I never thought I'd have a windows problem with a Linux distro. Seems that whenever I try to install an RPM from Packman, my computer will freeze up. Always in the exact same place. As soon as I click on the RPM, I will be prompted to open with Yast at which point the computer freezes. Sometimes the link will open, only to freeze when the download starts. Occasionally I'll get a chime sound from my speakers right before the freeze up. Only way to recover is to reset the computer.
I'm confident that its not hardware related, as I've dual booted the machine with Windows server 2003 on a seperate HD and it works without problems. I've also performed all updates available. I have no problems installing updates or browsing, etc. Just trying to install a package with Yast from Packman. Any suggestions (besides not using packman or Yast)?

Try using apt (and a GUI synaptic to install packman packages). Before you do this, go to the excellent Apt for SuSE website and read up on how to install apt. In particular, read about the component list. Install apt and synaptic. [To get synaptic, keep all the components]. Once you've installed synaptic, pick the packman packages from the "Not Installed" section and install them. You may also want to replace kaffeine, xine, mjpegtools and a few more packages since SuSE has deliberately broken them in order to comply with the law.
was checking this out because i have same problems.. am i missing something? im not seeing a not installed section.. i installed both apt and synaptic thru yast

I'm running synaptic-0.55.3. In synaptic, look at the bottom left. You'll see buttons labelled "Section", "Status", "Search", "Custom". Click on "Status". You should see the synaptic package listing modes change to 'All', 'Installed', 'Not installed', 'New in repository' etc.in the left pane.
