Hey all,
after upgrading my SuSE 9.2 installation to KDE 3.4, I have the following problems:
When I shutdown the computer over the Log Out command in the KDE menu, all that happens i that my computer switches to a black screen. All that is there, is my mouse cursor, in the form of an X. I have to switch to a console, login there and do an "init 0". Loging off or restarting the computer results in the same black screen.
Also, something else that's weird:
If I click on Log Out in the KDE Menu, I see the following options: End Current Session, Shutdown Computer, Restart Computer, and Cancel. If I press Cancel and again click on the Log Out button, the Shutdown Computer and Restart Computer options disappear. I find that kinda strange...
Distribution: Kubuntu, Ubuntu server, SuSE 11, Knoppix, Puppy, Myth. Oh alright then, all of them

Sounds like a disagreement with your video. I had a similar problem when upgraded, but also upgraded my Nvidia drivers at the same time so thought nothing of it as the install process removed the problem.
Are you using Nvidia or similar? Suggest re-install if you are.
Have you upgraded your kernel? There was a Suse update recently that may need to be finalised - again if using Nvidia re-install.
Re the logout - I always get the four options, even after cancelling, and thats on two different machines.
This is the type of thing that stops me from upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4. Not that it is specific to 3.4, but when my system is running stable then I like to keep it that way.
When I was running SuSE 8.1 and KDE 3.3 a similar problem occurred, so I had to reinstall kdebase3-kdm from time to time to correct the problem. However, when my KDE exited into X windows and had the cursor the whole system locked up. Accessing other logins was not possible. This problem does not happen with my new 9.2 KDE 3.3 system. Perhaps it is a kdebase3-kdm issue. Maybe try compiling your own from a RPM source.
Well, I am using an ATI card (Radeon 9500 Pro). I just upgraded the driver yesterday, didn't change anything. Recompiling the packages sounds like a good idea. I'll try compiling my own RPMs of KDE3Base and KDM and see how that works, I did have to compile my own Arts package, in order to get the system notifications to work.
I really think it has something to do with KDM, since I did have to re-add gnome after updating to 3.4.
Thanks a lot, I'll let you know if it works.
Well, I tried recompiling KDE3base, but after one hour I got the following error (even on the 2nd and 3rd try):

I tried to compile the package with rpmbuild --rebuild kdebase3-3.4.0-0.src.rpm
does anyone have an idea?
Am I missing some dependencies?
Not too sure about that one, but you could try and install libxxf86vm1 and the devel package that compliments it.
If you are compiling from a tar ball, when failure happens do not delete the directory, add whatever packages that are required, then make it again. The process will pick-up where it left off. This will save you time. Also, it is always, in my opinion, best to compile the software from the tar ball and then create a package once you know the program compiles without errors.
I sure hope this helps, but if not post your issues. I am happy to help.
Well, upgrading X.org seemed to take care of that problem, but now I got a new one. I get the following error now:

It would seem that I am also having the same problem with kdebase 3.3.2, and no one seems to know the solution. One option one person indicated, via googling, is to remove the lines that ask for suse_update_desktop_file
Well your fix worked out just fine. Thanks again for the help Pheidon Now if I could only get to the bottom of the issue of why my packages are so large. No one seems to know that one...
I've just found a solution to shutdown problem I had exactly the same.
When installing/upgrading to KDE 3.4 you're also upgrading kdm (of course if using ). And the script in etc/kde3/kdm is also upgraded.
I've stored the old one and it showed up to be a brilliant idea - after replacing the new with the old one shutdown works correctly
