Screen resolutions going screwy during boot

I would be grateful if anyone could point me to the right files to explore / edit to solve this:

My PC has Nvidia GeForce4 MX onboard graphics. Until recently, I had been running Open SuSE 10.0 with the standard drivers that came bundled with it, but decided to download the proprietary drivers from YaST online update, so that I could play games that need 3D acceleration. This seemed to work OK (and 3D is present).

I then decided to have a look at the Graphics Card / Display config options in YaST (sax2). Following this, I had serious trouble with the screen resolution, which I've largely resolved. However, the issue I've still got is the resolution being reset several times during the boot process:
  • At the GRUB splash screen, resolution is set to 1280x1024, and the display is fine
  • The initialisation screen is displayed, still at the same res.
  • The Nvidia logo is displayed
  • The screen displays a flickering beige pattern for about one second
  • The login screen is displayed, but with the resolution at 1024x768. The splash screen appears to be larger than this, though (which means that the options to reboot, shutdown, etc. are off the screen)
  • The small 'timer' (wheel?) icon is displayed in the middle of the screen. This is misshapen at first (meaning, I presume, that it is intended to be shown at a different resolution), but changes to a round icon after about 1 second.
  • Gnome starts up, and the resolution is set to 1280x960 (which I can control via the Resolution Switcher applet).

I've poked around in /etc, but can't find any files which could clearly be edited to solve this, and googling has produced nothing of any use. Hoping, therefore, that someone here can help.

Rob
