Gamma correction is ignored

I'm using Suse 10.0, and attempting to fine-tune the gamma of my monitor.

In the Display Control Center I get a nice slider to adjust the gamma, but it does nothing. I can slide it back and forth, and it makes no difference.

Same thing happens if I use the "xgamma" command in a console. The command appears to work, and the new values stick - but there is no effect on the actual display.

My graphics card is an integrated VIA KM400, and the display is an IBM ThinkVision TFT. The KM400 is recognised by Linux, but the IBM is not - so I have set to VESA (I've tried a few others as well).

The machine is dual-boot and I can adjust gamma under the Windows driver... but I'd much rather do my photo editing under Linux!
