Cannot load KDE/Gnome GUI on OpenSUSE 10

Hi all ! I'm new to LinuxQuestions.org.

I have an Acer 2412 Laptop with 256 MB Ram, 40 GB HDD, Wireless, a CD/DVD/Writer and PCI Express as the video card.

I loaded Suse 10.0 last night with KDE. After installation, the first time I booted it, it didnt load the GUI (although the essence of linux is the command line, i'd still want the GUI as i am not a power user yet).

I went into root and did init 3. Then tried sax2. got error - this video card was detected but not recognised.

I tried startX. IO error 104.

Any Ideas ??

Also, under Yast2 configuration, the PCI database comes up blank.
Clicking on ADD gets me the list of hardware eg - ACER 915GM video card etc.

Any Assistance would be much appreciated.

I also reinstalled Suse with the Gnome system - no go

If the driver's missing, how can i make it run with the framebuffer set ?

cheers !!

Anand

Gnome or KDE doesn't make a difference, both rely on the X server. You can try to start sax2 with a given driver as parameter:

sax2 -m i810 (or 'vesafb')

tried that . same error. It came up once with the console. but at 800x600 res.
i changed it to 1024x768... worked.. rebooted and logged back in.. still working

then when i brought it up after a shutdown.. it went back to text more !!.

what to do ??
