How to load KDE/Gnome?

Ok, I've decided to download and install a non-live version of linux.
But after installing, and booting, it doesn't load KDE or Gnome or anything similar.

I've tried it with Slackware, Debian and FreeBSD.

Or is there something I did wrong in the set up?
But I didn't see any options in the setup...

I've tried Slackware, Debian, FreeBSD and never had a GUI load at boot. Only the terminal like interface shows up.
Is there any command I should use?

for slackware or any other sitro
when u boot in to text mode
u can start the gui by
startx

if u have any configurations left then it wil report the errros
then u need to change the runlevel,from 3 to 4(for slack)
and 3-->5(for other distros)
this can be some from the file /etc/inittab

regards

in freebsd, you can enable gdm at boot by adding
gdm_enable="YES"
in /etc/rc.conf

ok, the "startx" didn't work for me ...
I guess it means it doesn't come with it or it didn't install?

But i'll see if this works with debian.

with slackware, do a xorgconfig as root, enter your hardware details then enter startx as your normal user. And btw if you dont know how to get a gui up and running why pick distros like slack, debian and freebsd ?
