Can't change screen resolution in SUSE 9.2

I've installed 9.2 from the ftp tree mirrored to hard disk. I was not given a choice of resolution at install and it came up at 1280 x 1024. I want to run at 1024 x 768. I have run SaX2 a number of times, where the only selection I can see is to uncheck the higher available resolutions than 1024 x 768. The result of this is a little box of a screen that fills about one-fourth of my monitor. If I edit XF86Config to remove the higher resolutions from the default 16-bit modeline, the outcome is the same. This is on a new Sony SDM-HS74P lcd monitor and Radeon 7200 QD card. How do I get 1024 x 768? Thanks.

Resolution

Make sure you are setting the MONITOR resolution to 1024x768 and not just setting the video card resolution....if all else fails pick a VESA monitor at 1024x768 but if you configure the monitor res..the card should step down to match.

I don't know where it is that you set the video card resolution? The monitor and video card are detected automatically. It's just that, running yast2 or sax2, the only thing I see related to screen resolution is a tab with resolution and color depth and no way to select the desired resolution. There is only a list of possible resolutions, checks in the check boxes alonside the supported resolutions, and a non-editable box that shows the starting resolution as the highest supported (checked) resolution. When I uncheck anything higher that 1024x768, the starting resolution is shown as 1024x768 but X restarts in a mode where the screen display only takes up about 1/4 of the monitor.

If you have the hardware setup in Sax2 then go to the kmenu -> System -> Desktop Applet -> Screen Resize & Rotate

This will start an applet that should appear in your task bar Right click on it and you should be able to choose a new monitor resolution.

Did that, thanks, it was easy to do but, the resize just shrunk the screen. It was a little bigger than half but something is screwy, here. The resolution is not changing, the screen real estate is.

Go into YAST2, Hardware, Graphics Card and Monitor and check settings for monitor and screen resolution.

Thanks but I've already done that; did it again, for good measure. When you choose graphics card and monitor in yast, it opens sax2 and all is as I have said before. The only configuration capability for resolution (that I can see) is to uncheck the supported resolutions that are higher than the one I want to use. This results in the desired, highest resolution then, 1024x768, showing as the 'starting resolution' but saving or testing that results in the display only taking up a fraction, about half, of the monitor screen, the rest is black.

If you're using KDE, did you check in the Control Center, Peripherals, Display to see what is shown there? If Gnome, I can't say where, but there must be an equivalent. Also, in Sax2 is your monitor detected correctly as to manufacturer, etc?

ebrke, I set the resolution in kcontrol but it did the same thing: made the display half the size of the screen. Just for fun, I set the resolution in sax2 to the same at the same time but it did not make a difference. Yes, the monitor is correctly detected.

Daumeier, thanks for the info and links; they seem to be talking about XFree86 but I'm using xorg. Mandrake's xorg is working w/o issue with this hardware.

reddazz, I manually configured with xorgconfig and the outcome was just the same!

Thanks to all for helping. I think I am back to Mandrake for the moment.

Rolf

I just installed 9.2 Pro from ftp and I am having the same issue. After the install it came up in 1280x1024. This was too small for me so I wanted to change to 1024x768. I set it up in YaST, (sax2), and upon restarting X, it reverts to 800x600. Even if you uncheck all resolutions except the one you want, it will run at 800x600. If I choose 640x480, it runs in about half the screen as the previous poster stated.

So far I can't get even 1280x1024 back, it's 640x480 (in half the screen), or 800x600.
