vnc question

just wondering which directories have to be in the path for to launch vncserver?

problem is, i have set up my system with a monitor till it was running how i wanted, and have webmin installed, but webmin doesnt seem to be able to affect my PATH properly, and therefore i can't start vncserver from webmin until i know which bits of the path must be included for vncserver to start.

vncserver needs to be run by a user, if webmin is running as nobody you can't run it from there

its either that or i need to find the configuration file for the default x server in solaris, i searched a bit for this on google, and most places seemed to think it was in /etc/x11/Xorg.conf but i dont have one there. i cant run kdmconfig, because the only output i can get it to give me on the screen im using is 640x480 - then kdmconfig complains that the terminal is too small.

a simple way i can think of to run vncserver from webmin is to create a cron job and assign it to root or whoever else you want it to run as, but dont make it active.

then you can manuall run the cron job from webmin, see if that works

also, if you didn't know, you can connect with ssh and run vncserver, when you disconnect it will still be running

if you are on a linux/unix machine you just type 'ssh server'
if you are on a windoze box then get putty.exe and connect to ssh that way.

to make a cron job use webmin, got to the scheduled cron jobs link on the system tab

To run VNC on Solaris all you need to do is.

Create the directories /etc/dt/config

in this directory create a file called Xservers

In this file add the line:

:10 Local local_uid@none root /opt/sfw/bin/Xvnc :10 -geometry 800x600 -depth 32

Restart the dtlogin process:

# /etc/init.d/dtlogin stop
# /etc/init.d/dtlogin start

Now connect with a VNC viewer with the command:

vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:10 where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address.
