Yes, of course you can install Solaris 10 x86 on a desktop PC. You also test your hardware's compatibility using this tool.

Or virtualize use Sun xVM Virtualbox.

By the way, if you're a Solaris newbie, or if you prefer a bleeding-edge Solaris distribution, or if you're switching from Linux (and you don't obviously need Sun support for Solaris 10), you could check an OpenSolaris-based distribution.

I'm happily using Solaris Express Community Edition for most of the PCs I use.

I don't really understand your question... OpenSolaris is built around Solaris technology: it's based on Solaris. Sun has been opening the Solaris code to the world and since some years ago it's developing the "next" Solaris version (in this case Solaris 11) in the Solaris Express program. In the essence, Solaris Express CE gives you a "preview" of what Solaris 11 will be. Project Indiana was launched later by Sun (citing Ian Murdock's same words) "taking the lesson that Linux has brought to the operating system and providing that for Solaris".

So the choice is yours. Solaris 10 and Solaris Express are both rock solid, but Sun doesn't support the latter. If you're planning using it for yourself, start with Solaris Express or an OpenSolaris distro of your taste. Sun also says that OpenSolaris will substitute Solaris Express in the future.

I don't known about VMware.
Did you have a look at Sun xVM VirtualBox?

you can use your hosts DVD drive. vmware can map it directly for your guest to use.

or, setup your own jumpstart server so you can install (and do it over and over again ) over the network (your virtual network, that is).

Sun is also still quietly updating Solaris 10, the most recent being the 10/08 release.
