Question

What, dare I ask is the point?
I'm still somewhat new to the wonderful world of tapes but...
If you wrote without compression you could subtract the size of files from total capacity...
Write block by block after end of tar file from /dev/zero to no-rewind/no-compress device counting as you go until tape returns it's end of tape error...
Or get a blank tape.

If you are writing data through the hardware compression then I can't see how you can accurately determine how much space your data is going to use hence knowing exactly how much space you have is meaningless.

Get another tape, read the label, plenty of space!
