Can I upgrade straight to 12.2 from 11.0 Slackware with out going to 12.0/12.1 first? I have the 12.2 DVD and the instruction for upgrading from 12.1 to 12.2, will they work?
If you want to upgrade from 11.0 to 12.2 you will have to upgrade to intermediary versions before (11.0 to 12.0 then 12.0 to 12.1 and finally from 12.1 to 12.2). Each time you would have to read carefully the CHANGE_AND_HINTS.TXT and UPGRADE.TXT files as well as the README.TXT.
So in the end, the easiest way is a fresh install to 12.2 (after backing up all your data).

Agreed.
When 12.1 came out I successfully carried out a 10.2 to 12.1 upgrade on 2 PCs. However, this took a lot of planning to avoid the many 'gotchas'. It IS possible to do this kind of upgrade in one step but you need to carefully read all the UPGRADE.TXT and CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file for ALL of the versions. I don't think I will do it again. It is much easier to back up settings and do a fresh install.
Usually upgrading between minor versions (12.0-12.1-12.2) is easier than upgrading between major versions (11.0-12.0) since the "gotchas" are more minor (less major changes between minor versions).
It is always possible to upgrade from old versions of Slackware up to newer versions, but as already mentioned you would have to use each respective CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT and UPGRADE.TXT files. You would not have to download all of the packages for each version, though.
Personally, if I were more than one major version away from the current version I would probably do a backup and fresh install. 11.0-12.2 is just one major version away, so I wouldn't mind going for it. Extra care would just be needed for the 11.0-12.0 changes.
Thanks jmhet42 for linking to my Upgrade HowTo. I hope to continue making these HowTos with each new version. All of them use the official Slackware docs. I simply elaborate on my experiences using the docs.
