Question upgrade 8.0 on k6-2 to 10

hi, i have 8.0 on an old amd k6-2. i just got the slack 10 cd's (btw, this went on one of those $200 linspire machines just fine, but did not get the monitor at highest res and missed the audio and cd).

i spent a lot of time modprobing the k6 to get stuff working and a lot of time getting the display config'ed and samba set up (i have tar'ed /etc up and saved it).

is it reasonable to install over 8.0? or do i need to do a fresh install?

thanks

Much easier to do a fresh install after saving data.

yes, it came up fairly easily with a few wrinkles. a friend had made some newer kernels that didn't load modules and these were still hanging around in the /boot partition and i got a lilo install error 1. but it still boots from hda, but not from the floppy.

and he misses some audio and x11 stuff. knoppic cd does a real good job of this and i have the x11 configs (one name ends in a -4) from it. but on slak 10,i see 3 config files in etc/. xorg.conf seems to be a generic one (on the new box), ther other two look like a frame buffer and a vesa flavour. these files look very different. iirc, there was some x prgram that i ran than gave some good results?. does anyone know what the easiest way to get slak to run the monitor at a higher res is? (i have this problem on both machines. i have the config from 8.0 on the old box , but it looks like the format of the config file may have changed a bit since 8.0?)

any pointers will be appreciated

thanks

rename XF86Config to xorg.conf and change the entry for the keyboard to 'knd', i believe.
