TravelMate 3022WTMi

This lappy should work fine right with slackware right?

debian and gentoo have been installed successfully before?

Just making sure, but is slackware capable of booting from a firewire external cd rom drive?

I'm pretty sure that it would be quite difficult to boot from 'a firewire external cd rom drive'. Does your BIOS support booting from there ?

At first boot You must interrupt the boot sequence by pressing F2 and change the BIOS boot order to boot first from CD ROM. Otherwise You will start the Windows configuring procedure, which takes long time and can only get interrupted by pressing power button and so corrupting the file system.
From here:
http://joerg.steindlberger.de/acer-t...020-linux.html
so I guess bios support booting from there since there isn't an internal cd rom drive.

Does having an external usb cd rom drive make it any easier for the booting to occur?

I'm actually thinking of buying the unit, not bought it yet...

Well, I think you can probably do it, as long as the kernel has built-in support for IEEE1394.

Am a new user of slackware here,
I installed slackware and sound, my network card(both ethernet and wireless), together with a host of other features didn't work. But when I installed kubuntu thereafter, everything works out of the box, what gives? How do I get them to work on slack?
I remember compiling and upgrading to alsa 1.0.14 but sound still didn't work, it says its redirected to null output.

Another question would be when I download source code and install through ./configure, make, make install, is there a specific place to put the source files? and is there a built in software available to convert it to the native .tgz package? I remember reading the linux cookbook saying that its possible with some software called make check or something like that...

For sound, check to see if it is not muted. ('alsamixer' or 'aumix') Then run 'alsactl store' as root to save volume settings. If that doesn't work try 'alsaconf'.

Can you post the output of 'lsmod'.

So far it looks like for ethernet connection you just need to run 'netconfig' to configure it. I believe the card uses the 'tg3' module, it should be listed in lsmod. If not, you may need to find it and install it.

For the wireless card, I think you may need this driver:

When I install the modules, do they automatically get loaded at boot time or do I have to edit the etc/rc.modules or some other file?

I don't have slackware on my computer now, but the last time I did lsmod, I think the list was empty, can't really remember...

Actually I got the modules you pointed out above, am just not clear on how to make them work...
Can someone teach me the exact way to install and load the modules at boot time?
What I did was tar zxvf the file in my home directory, cd moduledirectory, ./configure, make, make install. I tried modprobe some of the modules after that but it didn't work, said that module not found or something.

Btw, after installing alsa 1.0.14, I did alsaconf but it told me no legacy devices were found...

What kernel are you using (run 'uname -r' if you don't remember) ? Did you remember to install the kernel modules ?

I ran huge26.s before. I installed all software packages if that's what you mean, I think I'm going to install current on it soon. Btw, does reinstalling os on the hdd many times cause damage to any components?

Hi,

You need to install the huge26 modules, read the Slackware 11 RELEASE_NOTES .

Sure, re-installing too many times vaporizes bits on the hard disk! <- Just a joke!

Really, no harm done. The only thing that happens with the hard disk is mechanical wear but that MTBF 'mean time before failure' should not be a problem under normal uses. You can do a search for your hard disk or read the technical data provided with the drive. That excludes electronic failure do to abuse, mishandling or even electrical surges. Components do fail for varied reasons.

BTW, get the huge26 functional before you jump into the install of current. Get a little more experience. Not to say you can't do it but why not get one functional before jumping to a major release.

Actually, what I meant was whether reinstalling the os many times would have a much more detrimental effect than would normal usage...
I think I'll take your advice and install 11 as well as getting it to work first.

kernel-generic-2.6.17.13-i486-1.tgz
kernel-modules-2.6.17.13-i486-1.tgz
kernel-source-2.6.17.13-noarch-1.tgz
and when I boot up it stalls at cs: I0 port probe 0x800-0x80f:

Hi,

Did you install the modules for the kernel?

You should also read the UPGRADE.TXT.

Edit: include link

Actually I installed back slackware 11.0
After booting up into runlevel 4, I used pkgtool to install:
kernel-generic-2.6.17.13-i486-1.tgz
kernel-modules-2.6.17.13-i486-1.tgz
kernel-source-2.6.17.13-noarch-1.tgz

However, the booting process hangs at "cs: I0 port probe 0x800-0x80f"
Btw, the link you gave me was about an upgrade from slackware 11 to 12 right, how do I solve the current problem?
