Hi, is it possible to upgrade the ISO image to kernel version 2.6... i have SATA in my system and cant seem to get it installed... but as Slackware 9.1 runs 2.4 and is 2.6 ready would it be possible to upgrade the kernel on the cd?
I am about to install Slackware but I do not know how to compile stuff. When I had SuSE i tried compiling from source many things but I was given errors. I used gcc make, I am new to linux so that is probably why. Will I recieve those errors in slackware. The errors I recieved were stuff like --> I needed something else installed, etc... I said I needed the xfree86 but I already had that and so that's why I didn't know how to fix it.
Most things in slack shouldn't necessitate compiling from source. Usually you will just be able to use pkgtool, installpkg, upgradepkg, swaret, or whatever to install. I almost never compile from source, instead use makepkg which makes it much easier to go back later and change what packages you have installed.
Oh well that is awesome, I have Slackware 9.1 and have been using it for 2 or 3 days now and yet I haven't tried pkgtool yet. I'm gonna have to read up on that as I don't even know how it works. Is it installed already on a Slackware 9.1 system? Or do I have to install pkgtool myself?
Ok I'll give that a try, also I found a little bit of documentation on it if anyone who does not know about pkgtool (such as myself) would like to know more, at: http://www.slackware.com/config/packages.php
WOW pkgtool is GREAT!!! It works now that I am a super user, I had all these .tgz files for slackware and I never knew how to install them, I knew how to extract them but that is it. Thanks!
By the way, I know of one good site for Slackware compilations of software, it's called www.slackcare.com
Are there any other great sites that serve the same or similar purpose?
